Hypnosis and its subset, hypnotherapy, have always been steeped in myths. Some regard them to be black magic whereas others reject them as pseudo science. Following are some of the well known myths about hypnosis and the truth behind them.
Hypnosis has nothing to do with black magic of any kind. It borders more on the science of the human mind and is very simple to practice for anyone who is willing to learn it. People refuse to believe in hypnosis even after watching participants effectively undergoing it in public sessions. They say that hypnotised people allow practitioners to perform well in their art by not exhibiting enough mental strength to block the influence of their words. But this again is a complete fallacy. Hypnosis can in fact work on people who are mentally strong and are trying hard to resist the spell.
Another myth is that hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness, which again is a big misconception. A hypnotized individual is fully awake to what is going on around him. During the hypnotic state, the subject relaxes completely and is thus able to focus fully on the inputs provided by the practitioner.
Some scientists have found that hypnosis succeeds on just 5% of the human population, and this is another prevalent myth. The researchers are somewhat true in their own way, because they tried hypnotising their subjects by the same hypnosis technique without considering individual differences in character and temperament. Hypnosis can’t be straight jacketed like that and clicks only if there are different methodologies for different personality styles.
People also tend to connect hypnosis with meditation. However, meditation is a purely personal feeling that has got no involvement of communication, whereas communication is an integral part of any successful hypnosis. Trance too is not related to hypnosis at all. Just like meditation, trance is a state of mind, and it is not linked with communication in any manner, on the other hand the very crux of the hypnosis method is communication.
Another myth is that physical and behavioural changes in an individual are not possible through hypnosis training or hypnotherapy. Hypnosis is obviously not magic that it can transform the physique of an individual just like that. But it can bring about an improvement in physical health by altering behavioural patterns like overeating and constant smoking by raising motivation levels in an individual.
If an individual falls for all the wrong notions that exist regarding hypnotherapy and doesn’t go for a hypnotic session, then he will himself block his way to a better and healthier life.
